Kimono Rental in Kyoto for Men and Children
Where men, children and plus sizes can rent a kimono in Kyoto: the shops that dress them, sizes, ages, couple and family plans, and prices (Oct 2026).
Men, children and plus sizes can all rent a kimono in Kyoto; the shop to book for a mixed group is Hakuu in Gion and near Kiyomizu-dera, which lists more than 700 kimono including men’s and children’s and describes itself as plus-size friendly, rated 4.8 from 211 and from US$21 a person (checked October 2026). For children, WARGO’s family plan in Gion dresses them with a simple hairstyle and a kanzashi hairpin.

Men in kimono
A men’s kimono is worn with a narrower obi and, for formal photos, sometimes with a hakama. The larger shops all dress men. Hakuu’s Gion and Kiyomizu-dera shops list men’s kimono among their 700, and Liulian Travel’s kimono and photoshoot studio includes the dressing, basic hair grooming and accessories for men as well as women. Yumeyakata’s photoshoot offers an upgrade to a formal montsuki hakama.
Sizes matter more for tall men. Liulian Travel says that men over about 185 cm or with a waist over 125 cm will find fewer styles, and Yumeyakata’s rentals are not for people over 200 cm; message the shop before booking if you are near those limits.

Children in kimono
WARGO in Gion runs a kimono plan for children and families, rated 4.6 from 131: the kimono or yukata, obi, sandals, bag, tabi and the undergarments, a simple hairstyle with a kanzashi hairpin, and the dressing, with insurance in the price. The shop opens from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, and depending on the season and time you may wait 30 to 90 minutes, so book ahead.
Ages differ by booking. The kimono tea ceremonies at Shijo-Karasuma and near Kiyomizu-dera are not open to children under 7, and Traveling Tokyo’s kimono and matcha ceremony lets children under 5 join free, though it has no yukata in very small sizes. Yumeyakata’s rentals are not for babies under one.
Couples and plus sizes
Couples. Mimosa, a shop two minutes’ walk from Kodai-ji and ten from Kiyomizu-dera, sells a couple plan for kimono or yukata, with a haori jacket in autumn and winter and extras such as a Japanese umbrella for hire.
Plus sizes. Hakuu welcomes plus sizes and has professional dressers to fit them. Liulian Travel says women over about 175 cm or with a waist over 100 cm will find fewer styles. In both cases, message the shop with your height before booking.
