What a kimono photoshoot involves

Your booking time is your arrival at the studio, not the start of the shoot. Liulian Travel asks for about two hours for the dressing and hair before the photographer takes you out; a check-in at 2 PM means a shoot at about 4 PM. The shoot itself is an hour in the photoshoot options, with the photographer choosing the spots and showing you how to pose in a kimono. You get every original photo and a set of retouched ones; the kimono goes back to the shop by 5:30 PM the same day.

Two things to settle before you book. Makeup is not included at Liulian Travel, so arrive with it done. Add-ons, such as a hair upgrade or extra time, have to be chosen at checkout; the studio cannot add them on the day.

The photoshoots work Gion, Yasaka Shrine and the slopes below Kiyomizu-dera.

Where the photos are taken, and where not

The shoots work the same streets as everyone in kimono: Gion and Yasaka Shrine, and the stone slopes of Higashiyama below Kiyomizu-dera. In Gion, the private side streets have been closed to photography by the district’s residents since 2019, and signs warn of a 10,000 yen charge for entering them; maiko and geiko are not to be photographed without asking. A good shoot stays on the public streets, and on Hanamikoji itself, a public road.

Sizes

Kimono are cut to Japanese proportions and adjusted on the day. Liulian Travel says adult kimono may not fit well under about 150 cm, and that for women over about 175 cm or with a waist over 100 cm, and men over about 185 cm or with a waist over 125 cm, there are fewer styles; message the studio before booking if unsure. Hakuu, the Gion and Kiyomizu-dera shop, describes itself as plus-size friendly, with more than 700 kimono including men’s and children’s.
