What the basic price includes, and what costs extra

At most shops the base price buys the kimono, the obi, the undergarments, socks, sandals and a small bag, the dressing by the staff, and somewhere to leave your clothes and luggage. The differences are in the extras.

Hairstyling. YUUKAGA includes it in its Kiyomizu-dera rental; at its rental near Gion it is 1,500 yen extra, makeup 6,600 yen, and a photographer 8,800 yen per half hour. Yumeyakata charges 1,100 yen for a customised hairstyle and 2,200 yen if you ask for one on arrival.

Luggage. Clothes and a handbag are usually kept free; Yumeyakata charges 550 yen a piece a day for a suitcase, a stroller or large luggage.

The return. The kimono goes back by about 5 or 5:30 PM. Next-day return costs extra at most shops; Hakuu, the Gion and Kiyomizu-dera shop, does it free if you arrange it before you leave.

Season. Several shops give you a yukata, the light cotton summer kimono, from June to September and a kimono from October to May at the same price.

Is the cheapest rental the best value?

Not always. A rental at the bottom of the ladder dresses you and sends you out without a hairstyle, and adding one at the counter costs 1,500 yen at one Gion shop and up to 2,200 yen on arrival at another. For a first time, the second rung, a rental with the hairstyle and accessories already included, is usually the better buy.

If you only have half a day, a kimono with a tea ceremony costs about twice a basic rental but gives you the kimono and an hour and a half of culture in one booking. The kimono tea ceremonies compares them.
